Solid and Hazardous Waste Management Experience

ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT OF TRANSPORT CLEANING FACILITY

Phoenix performed an audit of this facility than included a tank truck cleaning facility, a railcar cleaning facility, and a laboratory. The truck and railcars carried a variety of hazmat that had to be removed and properly disposed. Hazardous materials were stored in shipping containers, lab cabinets, and bulk tanks. The laboratory, due to the nature of its business, handled a large variety of hazardous materials (solid, liquid, and gas).

DESIGN OF DRUM STORAGE WAREHOUSE

Phoenix prepared the design for a contained storage facility for drummed hazardous waste materials. The warehouse has over 30,000 square feet under roof with a full-length loading dock on one side. The interior was divided into 10 bays so that incompatible materials could be kept separated. Each bay was curbed to provide containment in the event of a spill. The floors were epoxy coated to protect the concrete. The warehouse has been in service since 1997.

DESIGN OF PRETREATMENT TANK TO REMOVE TCLP TOXICITY

A pretreatment system was designed by Phoenix engineers to remove RCRA hazardous waste characteristics prior to discharge into an earthen lagoon system. A feasibility study was performed to determine the impact of the TCLP regulation on the facility. Installation of pretreatment facilities to eliminate the toxicity characteristic prior to entering the lagoons was the recommended compliance strategy based on cost savings. Treatability investigations were performed to design a pretreatment process. A 150,000 gallon aerated pretreatment tank was sized based on the study. The treatment improvements were designed by PHOENIX and the owner constructed the tank. This cost avoidance strategy saved the owner over $4 MM in RCRA retrofit costs for the earthen lagoons.
